  • Secretary-General of the Secretariat for the Coordinating of the Peace Process in Sri Lanka (since June 2004)

  • Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs in the United Nations (February 1998 - May 2003)
  • Head of the UN Institute for Disarmament Research until 1992
  • Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations

Education:

  • B.A. (Major in English Lit. & French) (Honors) University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka
  • M.A. (in International Studies) American University in Washington, D.C.

General Information:

  • Entered the Sri Lankan foreign service in 1965
  • Between 1965 – 1983 he held various diplomatic positions in London, Beijing, DC, and New Delhi, in addition to being director of the Non-aligned Movement Division of the Foreign Ministry during Sri Lanka’s Chairmanship of the NAM
