  • Special Assistant to the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations (1989-1996),
  • led the team in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations responsible for the United Nations peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia (1991 to 1996)
  • Head of the UNHCR office in Singapore (1981-1984)

Education:

  • Ph.D Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he also earned two Master’s degrees

General Information:

  • Since 1978, he has worked for the United Nations, serving with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
  • Tharoor is also the author of eight books and was awarded the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize among others
