Issue 40 - 16 November 2006 - ILC Elections Completed in One Round of Voting

New York, 16 November 2006 – The General Assembly held elections for the members of the International Law Commission on 16 November.

ILC elections follow the rules in the body’s 1946 statute.  According to amended Article 9, those candidates who receive the greatest number of votes and not less than a simple majority of the Member States will be elected.  The number of seats available to each region was determined in a 1981 General Assembly decision, which gives 8 seats to Africa, 7 to Asia, 4 to Eastern Europe, 7 to Latin America and the Caribbean, and 8 to Western Europe and other states.

The qualifications of the 44 eligible candidates were circulated by the Secretary-General in June and are available here.

The successful candidates in the election are listed below.  The top-scoring candidates from each region are noted in bold.  Those marked with (*) currently hold a seat on the ILC.  Successful candidates for re-election will serve another five-year term beginning on January 1, 2007.
